Ben Folds and His Orchestra

Last night, bethje and I went to see Ben Folds at the Mann Music Center in Philadelphia. I was working that day, so I parked my car in the city during the day, which ended up costing me a pretty penny (or, more accurately, the equivalent of 2200 pretty pennies). Then, after work, I picked up Beth at the bus terminal, and drove to the Mann. Well, except I ended up going the wrong way from the Art Museum Circle, so I had to backtrack, and the concert had already started by the time we got to the venue. We missed hearing "Zak and Sara," and Ben was playing "Smoke" as we made our way up to our seats in the balcony. On this tour, Ben is accompanied by an orchestra, which worked surprisingly well with the combination of old and new songs that he played. The setlist included a few songs from his upcoming album, as well as some from both his solo albums and his work with the Five. I remember hearing "You to Thank," "Gracie," "One Down," "The Ascent of Stan," "Not the Same" (which included his typical direction of the audience in singing the backing vocals), "The Last Polka," and "Steven's Last Night in Town," finishing the whole thing with "The Luckiest." The show was about an hour and forty minutes long, but it felt really short, and I don't think that's just because we got there late.

So far, I have yet to leave the Mann at night without getting lost. I had a return route mapped out, but my plans went awry when we weren't able to go straight out of the venue. The entrance for the eastbound Schuylkill Expressway on Montgomery Drive isn't very clearly marked, so we ended up going the wrong way down West River Drive, ending up in Bala Cynwyd. I wish the Fairmount Park area weren't so confusing, but we did eventually manage to get back to New Jersey without too much trouble. It's embarrassing that I ended up driving well out of the way, though.

Before returning home, we stopped at Denny's, where it turned out to be Hawaiian Weekend. As far as I could tell, that simply consisted of the waitresses wearing flowers, either in their hair or on leis. Also, we noticed that they have a new menu with food items named after recent bands that I really don't know anything about (Taking Back Sunday, Plain White T's, All-American Rejects, and Eagles of Death Metal). I just had the Moons Over My Hammy, though. I like Denny's, but I don't like how annoying teenagers are always showing up there at night.

Well, that's it for now. I have a few other posts planned out, but I probably won't post any of them until tomorrow.
